4 out of 5 stars Ingenious concept   October 29, 2008
W. Gary Parsons (Philadelphia, PA, USA)
This mower is everything I wanted. I knew there were some weak areas, from other reviews, but I bought it anyway. It cuts grass good. I like the removable battery. I like the size, it stores easily out of the way. I like the fact that it can be used on battery or cord or both. I like the easy height adjustment.

The selector switch does not stay on charge by itsself but is easily wedged in position with a key. When rolling it upended through the house on the front wheels, the wheels came off because the axle is snapped into a slot. that was easy to fix by adding a simple bracket, I can see it would not be a problem if I could keep all 4 wheels on the ground.

I would reccomend this item over anything else I could find.

4 out of 5 stars Works for me!   October 27, 2008
P. A. Brady (Indianapolis, IN)
I've owned one of these for one summer, and now it's about time to remove the battery and put it in the basement for the winter so it won't freeze (one of the main reasons I bought this model). No problems so far. It runs for an hour straight and will do my complete yard plus the alley, and I've never run out of battery. Even though I don't "need" it, I tested the corded option one day and thought I had a defective mower. However, it seems that this mower won't run on a GFI circuit. Once I figured that out it ran fine (and more powerfully). I told their customer support, but I don't think they were aware of this issue. Maybe a design change is needed. Insignificant problem to me, tho. But it's nice to know that when the battery starts getting weaker I can rely on the cord (or just buy another battery!) I only wish it cut a wider swath, but my yard isn't that large, and the smaller mower is easier to handle, so it's a trade-off.
I use it as a mulcher, so haven't used the rear bag at all. I suppose it would be somewhat harder to handle with the bag attached, but cannot attest one way or the other. I hope I can come back with as positive a review after next summer.

1 out of 5 stars Useless, Dangerous. No Customer Service. Negative stars for this mower   October 19, 2008
jmkct (Harwich, MA)
Remington could have a great product if they fixed some MAJOR problems. But as the mowers are made right now - I would not recommend them to anyone. They are useless once you start having the front wheel issues described below. And these mowers are very dangerous. I will not let my kids use it as I am afraid they may flip it over to fix the front wheels and end up losing an arm. AMAZON should not sell this dangerous product.

The bad:
1. Safety key pops out while mowing. Expect to spend lots of time looking for this key - the motor does not shut down when the key pops out - it keeps going until you release the handle. When I realized this was a problem I made a note to pick up something to tether the key to the mower. Unfortunately before I did this the key popped out and the mower ran over it breaking it. It was just long enough so it works, but there is nothing that sticks out that I could attach a tether to. This would be an issue I could live with had I tethered the key when I first bought it.

2. Front wheels slide into a channel in the plastic body from the bottom. On the second use the front wheels started to slip out of this channel and there does not appear to be any mechanism that keeps them in place!?! As noted in a previous comment - DO NOT flip the unit over to slide in the front wheels as the unit WILL TURN ON if the safety key is in place leaving you exposed to the spinning blade. This is a showstopper. This is one of the worst examples of an engineering flaw I have ever seen.

3. No customer support.
Don't bother contacting REmington - you are directed via recording to visit the desatech website (whover they are). I've sent several requests to Desatech via there web form but have receive no replies.

If you buy this unit - expect to be dissatisfied within a couple of weeks. Expect to spend a lot of your mowing time trying to jimmy the front wheels back in place. Honestly - this design is so utterly rediculous! I can't fathom how a company could invest in a product that has such a basic design flaw. The front wheels float in a channel. If the front of the mower comes off the ground - the wheels fall out of the channel and will not slip back in place unless you manually manuever them back.

I spent almost as much time putting the wheels back in place as I do mowing. It also annoys me that I need to try and keep the front end from coming off the ground when mowing. The front wheel thing didn't get really bad until after the 30 day return period was over. I ended up paying a local kid to cut my grass (with his mower) for most of the summer because it is such a pain to use the Remington. My hope that they will stand behind their product and issue a fix for the front wheels is all but gone. I will try to reqeust a return authorization one last time. It will be worth the 50-100 bucks it will cost me to ship it to TN.

I'm thinking of writing the MASS Attorney General to complain and let them know about the safety issue. Having front wheels that are not properly attached plus having a mower that will turn on when you flip it over to fix the wheels is incredibly dangerous.

Save yourself the trouble and buy a different brand.

3 out of 5 stars does the job well but POOR manufacturing or quality control   October 18, 2008
Dustin Tyson (Pearl, MS)
Bought this mower with the extra battery and "REAR" discharge chute. I've already put a review on the chute so i'll stick with the battery and mower on this review. First I looked at mower blade. DULL like it had NEVER been sharpened and looked like it had already been used. Sharpened blade. Well the first few times I used the mower, I noticed that the wheels are severly wobbly and the front axle would halfway fall out of place whenever i'd slowly lift front of the mower to turn and mow on a different lane in the yard. ANNOYING! Called Remington for parts 1 800 626 2237 got them to ship me holding U brackets and new wheels. The newe replacement wheels aren't perfect but no where near as WOBBLY as original. Shipping of course was free UPS 3 to 5 business day servivce. Directions were pretty clear and I had no problem installing the front right. the front left was tough but got extra pair of hands to help. Done. Week later the Selecting Nob ( to choose between Charge, 60v, corded, and Boost mode)would move out of CHARGE position by itself. I guessed there was a malfunctioning spring or something. Called Rem again around October 5 to 8th and they shipped me more axle securing brackets instead of the Nob fixing part. Called again tuesday Oct 14 2008, they said i should get the Nob part Monday the 20th. I dont mind working on anything as I am a mechanically inclined person. But NOT WHEN IM PAYING 400 plus bucks for something that should be BRAND NEW AND READY TO USE...as virtually maintenance free as a electric mower. So far the Extra Battery and the included Battery are holding their charges just fine. Per the included manual...after the 3 or 4th charge. I got at least 30 minutes of full regular power out of the battery and the last 20 minutes I had to cut my walking pace down to one third. However, think about this. each charge per battery can one yard (about a quarter of acre) if not more and it only costs about 10 cents or less per charge. That's VERY cheap when you break down the costs of using gas mower per yard. So i have no problem taking about ten more minutes per yard to mow at dirty cheap price in the end. If you can get over dealing with what i've had to go through with this mower's replacement parts issue, then this is a great " pay for itself" mower that is a decent bit quieter than gas mower.

4 out of 5 stars Best in class from an experienced user   October 5, 2008
D. Hazlett
I've owned this for about 2 month now. Previously, I used a battery powered Sunlawn reel mower which is basically a Brill. This far better for the following reasons:

1. Battery is much more powerful. I have a medium sized lawn, and it has never died before I finished.
2. The grass catcher actually works, an achievement for battery powered mowers.
3. The mower height adjustment works effortlessly and provides a wide range which is also unusual in this class.
4. The cut exactly like a gas powered mower. My reel mower left wisps all over and required double mowing.
5. Noise, and fumes obviously, are greatly reduced over a gas-powered mower. I even prefer the low hum to the high pitched shear that my other battery powered reel mower produced.

I have Zoysia in the front and Bermuda in the side and back. Zoysia can be tough if you aren't able to mow every week, but I haven't had any issues even when I couldn't mow for two weeks due to rain.

I highly recommend this mower... I feel that this mower moves the cordless electric mower forward to a viable option for those who want less mess (oil, gas), less noise, and don't want to compromise either their time or the look of their lawn.

The only reason I gave 4 stars rather than 5 is that one of the wheels wobbled a bit upon delivery. It has not impacted the performance, but I felt that it should not have done that out of the box.

My only regret is that I bought a second battery. I haven't needed it. Try it out first and see if it can handle the size of your lawn before buying a second battery.
