Trick bag on the "Warranty" Probably a good product if you don't need a warranty. July 14, 2010 R. Hollenbeck (Missouri , Near STL) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this item by mail because I did not want to drive all over gods creation. Product arrived. I added oil and gas as instructed. Mower ran for 2 minutes then threw a rod. Took it to two LawnBoy service centers (also Briggs & Stratton SC). Without any disassembly they both pronounced "It threw a rod". Well no joke! They said no sense in taking it apart.....warranty will not cover it. They will treat it as you did not put oil in it.
Notified Amazon...said they could not take it back because it was hazardous. Said get a claim number on the Warranty form Lawnboy if you can not get satisfaction.
Called Lawnboy again. They sent me somewhere else that was also another 50 miles from my house. I asked for claim number....they said must be looked at by service center first.
Again another service center would not dissemble.
Called Lawnboy back. Again no claim number.....suggested I take it over and over to service centers till I found one that would take it apart if I wanted a claim number.
Later without hope...I took small engine apart. Obviously had oil in it. All friction surfaces were clean and perfect except for crank/rod connection (If there was no oil other surfaces would be damaged as well).
Contacted Lawnboy and offered to send pictures, of course dis-assembly voids the warranty. And yet they still would not take my name and give me a claim number.
Thanks a lot Amazon for being part of the system that lets everyone turn there back on the customer and point at someone else.
Super easy to start, runs with POWER July 13, 2010 L. Reinhart 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My old mower died on me, and I was sick and tired of having to start and re-start it constantly. This Lawn Boy is now 4 for 4 on starts, one pull. On the first cut, my grass had been growing for about a month (since the old one died, half my lawn was uncut) and it was flawless. Didn't bog down at all. I am extremely happy with this mower.
Value for money June 24, 2010 D. Deutsch (Staten Island, NY) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Great power, low noise, and cuts evenly. Wide tires enhance control over uneven terrain. Starts immediately each time. Frugal gas consumption. Lawn looks sweet. Have used Craftsman in the past, but this mower is far superior.
Bagging doesn't work June 20, 2010 Jimm (Pennsylvania Forests) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Bought this mower at Home Depot. When I cut the grass, I bag it and use the clippings in the garden. The Lawn Boy is poorly designed to bag your grass. The slot from the mower deck to the bag is small, about 3" by 5". The grass gets clogged up and none goes into the bag, so in effect it reverts to a mulching mower with all the grass clippings being deposited back on the ground with a lot of clumps of grass where you turn the mower. When I contacted Lawn Boy Customer Service, instead of just admitting the design is bad, they do this song and dance (see below). If you want to mulch, ok, buy it. If you want to put your clippings on a compost pile or on your garden, it's not going to work. Here is the response i got:
"Our fair and flexible warranty policies were created to ensure that any defect in materials or workmanship will be covered at Toro's expense. While we are very sorry for the inconvenience you have experienced, we must respectfully decline your request for a refund or replacement. Refunds, returns and exchanges are handled strictly through the place of purchase only.
Please find below some tips on cutting and mulching problems:
· We recommend washing under the deck with a hose. Instructions for this are located in the owner's manual. There could be something on the surface of the deck that is causing the grass clippings to stick. (There is nothing there-who wants to wash with a hose every time you cut the grass?)
· Make sure the blade is sharp (for best results, replace or sharpen yearly)(Blade is brand new)
· Be sure to operate the machine at full throttle (It runs at its own predetermined speed, there is no throttle)
· Cut only 1/3 of the grass blade at a time (You've got to be kidding. Go over the grass 3 times?)
· Mow only dry grass or leaves (Ok, but sometimes the grass is a little bit damp - my old $79.95 mower I bought at Wal-Mart 10 years ago could cut damp grass with no problem)
If the finished lawn appearance is unsatisfactory, try one or more of the following:
· Walk at a slower pace while mowing
· Raise the cutting height on your mower (My height is set in the middle of the available choices on the mower)
· Cut the grass more frequently (Yeah, I really want to do that-I cut the grass once a week as I've been doing for 30 years with my old cheap mower)
· Overlap the cutting swaths instead of cutting a full swath with each pass
· Set the cutting height on the front wheels one notch lower than the rear wheels (For example, set the front wheels at 2 inches and the rear wheels at 2 3/8 inches.) This will increase the air flow under the deck and works well on plush or spring cutting."
So there you have it: cut the grass twice a week instead of once, cut only 1/3 of the height at a time, and make sure it's perfectly dry. The rest is nonsense. Instead of just admitting the design is bad, they do this song and dance. If you want to mulch, ok, buy it. If you want to put your clippings on a compost pile, it's not going to work.
easy starter, good mulcher June 6, 2010 Gerald M. Goolkasian (Lexington, MA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My Lawn Boy model 10640 is still quite new, but so far I'm very pleased.
It starts right up without priming as promised, on the 1st or 2nd pull each time.
Of equal importance to me is that it does a very good job mulching with no grass left behind.
I never bag the grass so the mulching was the main reason I chose the Lawn Boy, and I am quite satisfied.
One thing to note is that if the grass is damp or wet and you are mulching it, you will get some that sticks to the mower's blade housing, but a few scraping tools and 5 minutes work cleans up the machine sufficiently.
It also is easy to change the blade height. Keeping it on a higher setting allows better mulching.
I would buy it again.
