Strong, efficient, heavy mower. July 23, 2010 Lola Odiaga (Guilford, CT) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am a 5'1", 110 lb, strong and healthy senior citizen. I am glad I work out at the gym otherwise I don't know how I would negotiate a lawn mower such as this. It does a good job, it keeps mowing for at least 2 hours after being charged. The cons are: it does not like to turn corners, and it weighs about 70 lbs. It is bit noisier than other electric mowers that I've owned, both corded as well as battery powered. It certainly is less noisy than a gas mower, and it does not pollute. It comes with a 2-year warranty from the maker which was put to the test in our case: it went dead one day, and a Toro dealer fixed it. The cause was a loose wire connected to the battery, and the repair was of course covered by the warranty.
enjoy the silence July 16, 2010 Ed Sanders I live on about 1/3 of an acre and it takes me about 40 minutes to mow the yard (I don't put in enough effort to call it a lawn). This mower gets it done. This is my second battery powered electric (first lasted 8 years w/ one battery replacement in year eight just before it died) and there are a few different reasons I favor them.
1. they are quiet (this thing sounds about as loud as a small beehive) If your 10 feet away you don't even notice it. If you like to mow early, your neighbors won't even know.
2. I like not going to the gas station. I haven't tried to do the math, but I would imagine it is cheaper than fueling w/ gas as well.
3. No fumes. between the noise and the smell, mowing with a gas powered machine can be unpleasant. Using this is more like pushing a stroller w/ a very fat baby in it.
What separates this mower from competitors is the recessed wheels. I'm OK w/ mowing and yard work, but I'm not in love w/ spending time on my yard. You can cut reasonably close to buildings, trees, whatever, pretty nicely.I don't get the trimmer out every time I mow.
quiet but heavy to operate July 16, 2010 a. jimmy gapusan (HANAHAN, SC, US) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
the toro 20360 e-cycler lawnmower is easy to start, go to your lawn and start mowing. no gasoline to pour or fumes to smell. no oil to spill on you driveway or grass. the only drawbacks that i could identify right away are, it's weight-heavy to push around specially on an incline even going crosswise, and difficulty to maneuver.
toro would be wise to consider putting larger wheels in the back to make it easier to push and maneuver. self-propel operation would probably drain the battery quickly.
i like the quiet operation- no need to worry about waking up your neighbors- you can mow anytime you feel like it.
Not even close to what Toro claimed it would be July 14, 2010 BobCo21 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this mower the first day it was available thinking it would certainly help solve the electric mower problems. Boy, am I sad I did.
1. It's heavy and very bulky to push. The front wheels sit so far forward they hang up on eveything.
2. The grass catcher is worthless. It will last forever because nothing goes in it. All the grass goes right back on the grass.
3. It doesn't cut well at all. It just seems to push the grass over. I keep it fully charged and it doesn't help.
4. It is very poorly made. It is just plain cheap! The wheel height adjustment levers will cut you if you don't use gloves and all the pieces just seem cheap. I know the charging plug slot will break soon. It is so loose.
These are just some of the points I dislike. Something from Toro should be so much better! This mower will certainly hurt their reputation as a quality manufacturer.
Best lawn-care purchase I've made in years July 14, 2010 W. Boyce 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
About 7 years ago I decided to go green in my yard. Aside from the maintenance hassles (oil, plugs, filters, etc.), the air and noise pollution from my gas mower was horrendous. After doing much research I decided battery mowers were not good enough and purchased a Black & Decker MM875 (along with heavy duty extension chords). It has been an adequate mower, hassle free, and inexpensive to operate. Along with a corded electric trimmer/edger and electric chain saw I was set & green.
This year I decided "adequate" was not good enough and did some updated research. I purchased the Toro E-Cycler after reading reviews from many sources. I've had it for months now & those reviews did not do it justice. I've never felt strongly enough about a purchase to take the time to review it until now. This mower is great.
So, what's the biggest difference between the corded MM875 and the battery E-Cycler? Hint: it's not about the chord. The Black & Decker is an electric yard appliance; the Toro is an honest mulching mower that just happens to run off a battery. The MM875 is billed as a mulching mower, but it seams to cut once and that's it - thatch buildup was always a problem as the clippings were too large to decompose well. If grass or weeds were allowed to get long, it would take 2 passes to get everything cut - and the minimum recommended height adjustment for mulching (as opposed to bagging) is WAY too high. The Toro does not have these problems. 1 pass and done. The metal deck is shaped like Toro's gas mowers so grass is properly recirculated for multiple cutting resulting in tiny clippings. As with any mower - even gas - it will bog down in very heavy or wet grass, but I was pleasantly surprised that this was LESS of an issue than with the corded MM875.
OK, about the cord vs battery. Batteries are expensive and eventually need to be replaced. With this model you can't replace the battery yourself (at least not supposed to). Car batteries don't last long in the Florida heat, so only time will tell if this expense becomes a big negative. On the other hand we get lightning almost every day during the growing season, even hours before the rain starts. Trailing 100 feet of electrical wire behind you is not exactly the safest thing you could do. I learned to mow in a pattern that did not cross the trailing cord (much) and it did not bother me once I got used to it - until I didn't have to any more. Like the tension headache you didn't know you had until it's gone.
Two quibbles: 1- There is no charge level indicator. This is a $400 machine and they skimped on a circuit you could pick up for $3 retail at Radio Shack? Toro missed an easy one. 2- The bagging attatchment will go unused at this house. It clogs easily and when it does get full it puts too much weight to the back making the front wheels lift too easily and even bounce.
The E-Cycler is a bit heavy - about the same as a comparable size gas mower and much heavier than the plastic-decked MM875. It rolls easily and unless you have a steep hill should not be a problem. I'm a 50-something heart attack survivor and have found it quite easy to push around. If you absolutely MUST have a self-propelled mower, you're not really interested in an electric anyway.
Pros: Great cut, good power, mulches well, decent 20" swath, plenty of run-time for average size lawn, no cords, quiet, low operating cost, low maintenance, near-zero pollution.
Cons: Heavy, no charge indicator, unbalanced by rear bagging.
Buy this mower and scrap the gas waster. Green lawn, Green planet.
